Finance Director – Belfast

 

We now wish to recruit a Finance Director to join and enhance our senior management team.  Based in our Belfast office, this is a new position within the company and offers an exciting and challenging career development opportunity for the right person who can demonstrate they share our values and have the necessary skills, knowledge, experience, commitment and attitude to play this pivotal role.

 

Overview

Reporting to the Managing Director, the Finance Director will be an integral member of the senior management team and will be a Board Director. Acting in a key role within the organisation, the post holder will be responsible for the provision of accurate and timely financial information and strategic and financial advice to the senior management team and to the Board.

The Finance Director will be responsible for all finance related activity, including risk management and controls, financial forecasting and reporting, company secretariat, and management of funding and other external stakeholder relationships. In addition, the company has recently invested heavily in a new finance and document control system and the Finance Director will be responsible for ensuring that this new system is utilised to its maximum potential across the company.

 

Key Responsibilities

 

Risk Management, Financial Reporting & Control

• Develop, implement and maintain sound financial controls, policies and procedures to ensure effective and efficient financial and risk management within the company.

• Manage the accuracy and integrity of financial reporting, ensuring all reports are presented accurately, on time, and in compliance with all relevant reporting standards.

• Undertake reconciliations of all balance sheet accounts, including maintenance of a fixed asset register and reconciliation of inter-company trading accounts.

• Ensure customers are billed accurately and on time, and bad debt is minimised through appropriate revenue collection and protection and credit control measures.

• Provide accurate and timely monthly Board packs and all other company secretariat requirements including but not limited to preparation of minutes, relevant filings and submissions.

• Install and maintain appropriate internal financial controls and risk management processes across all operations.

• Develop appropriate expenditure control policies for all company expenditure, including staff expenses and inter-company recharging, providing reports and recommendations to divisional team leaders and directors.

• Prepare the company’s year-end statutory accounts and liaise with the external auditors and tax advisors.

 

Financial Analysis & Performance Management

• Prepare financial reports, budgets and projections, and provide advice and analysis for the Board and senior management team to help deliver strong profitable growth for the company and forecast future funding requirements.

• Develop and maintain relationships with the internal team leaders and directors and prepare, monitor and maintain annual divisional and company budgets and monitor associated outcomes.

• Lead and prepare tracking of performance against the company’s operating budget through the development of Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) to ensure that all financial KPIs are met, and individual staff performance can be evaluated.

• Prepare project job costing reviews and variation reports such as Project Cost Value Reconciliations (CVRs) for the senior management team.

• Develop and maintain the accuracy of the company’s cost of delivering projects to assist with tender bidding and identifying opportunities for cost reduction.

• Be proactively involved in the senior management team and challenge ongoing financial performance within the wider business, identifying trends early and interpreting information quickly to ensure that action is agreed and carried out effectively.

• Identify innovative and creative opportunities to make cost savings and efficiencies, and work with the business to deliver these.

 

Funding / Tax Compliance

• Manage cash flow to meet working capital requirements through the preparation of a weekly cash flow report, ensuring compliance with any debt covenants.

• Assess and reduce the company’s exposure to financial risk, including currency management.

• Ensure the company is in compliance with all Corporation Tax, PAYE, NIC, VAT and CIS legislation and that all statutory returns are completed and submitted on time.

• Maximise the grant opportunities available to the company.

• Maximise the funding opportunities available to the company.

 

External Relationships

• Support the Managing Director in developing the company’s external reputation and brand with relevant external stakeholders, by building strong relationships with government agencies such as Invest Northern Ireland and industry bodies.

• Manage the company’s bank relationship.

• Manage and develop strong working relationships with other key stakeholders including the company’s auditors, tax advisors, legal advisors, bankers and other key financial third parties.

 

Other

• Develop and manage the company’s new software package to its maximum potential, ensuring it operates reliably, efficiently and meets the company’s ongoing operational requirements.

• Lead and develop a professional finance team that is target driven, commercial and customer focused whilst ensuring compliance with all statutory and accounting regulations.

• Review and maintain insurance cover for the company’s assets and ensure that the company is adequately insured against potential risks to its business activities.

 

Qualifications and Experience

 

Essential

• Educated to Degree level with a professional accounting qualification (ACA/CIMA/ACCA) or international equivalent.

• Minimum of 5 years’ experience at a Financial Controller / Company Accountant level or equivalent within a small or mid-size contracting or manufacturing business.

• Commercially astute with demonstrable experience of leading, managing and developing a finance and accounting team.

• Experience of adopting a methodical and logical approach to the analysis of information along with the versatility to be able to contribute creativity to decision making.

 

Desirable

• Service / consultancy industry experience; and/or

• Manufacturing industry experience.

 

Competencies and Aptitudes

• Excellent people management and interpersonal skills and the ability to work well with others in the pursuit of team objectives.

• Excellent verbal & written communication skills.

Overview

Acting in a key role within the organisation, the post holder will be responsible for the day to day project management of key contracts and will manage client relationships to a professional high standard ensuring resources are adequately managed on projects.  In addition, the Operations Manager will be responsible for managing a growing team of professional engineers to oversee their work and coach and mentor them to improve their overall skills and experience.

 

Key Responsibilities

• Day to day project management of significant contracts.

• Ensuring projects are delivered within agreed parameters, including within budget and within agreed timeframes.

• Commercially astute with demonstrable experience of successfully delivering large scale commercial projects in the UK.

• Experience of leading, managing and developing a professional engineering team.

• Ability to act as Project Engineer reviewing mechanical design for a range of projects; particularly in the commercial, civic and cultural, educational and healthcare sectors.
