The project comprises the construction of a two storey 4,600m2 extension over an existing two storey library building. The accommodation provided on the new second and third floor comprises a variety of flat floor teaching spaces, 4 tiered lecture theatres, cellular and open plan offices, toilets and ancillary areas. Internal plantrooms are situated in close proximity to the tiered lecture theatres. The plantrooms house the air conditioning plant for the tiered theatres. The new two storey extension is constructed to span independently above the existing building and it is supported on structural steel trusses connected to double height steel columns outside the footprint of the existing building. The steel columns are fixed to concrete bases which in turn are supported by a series of mini conrete piles under each base. Underground services in the vicinity of Block F are diverted to facilitate the installation of the concrete mini piles.
