This project involved the complete interior refurbishment of the National Shrine, which attracts 1.6 million pilgrims each year. The basilica, which can accommodate 10,000 people, was built in 1976, but very little enhancement work had been carried out since then. The refurbishment of the building included new services throughout with the addition of lifts and a full internal fit-out.

IN2 carried out extensive environmental analysis, as during wintertime, continuous cold discomfort issues were experienced within the Chapel areas, by congregation members.

Given the scale of the basilica, the thermal mass and air leakage associated with it, the resolution of the comfort heating issues posed a difficult problem. As previously noted noise issues needed to be taken into account with any proposed heating system.

Extensive computer simulation analysis was undertake nand this enabled detailed assessment of comfort conditions both for the existing and proposed installations. The proposed solution was to provide Radiant Panels at ceiling level throughout the Chapel areas.

In this configuration, the existing ventilation system would not be operated, as there would be sufficient inherent air leakage / building air volume for the congregation’s requirements, therefore enabling a reduction in energy costs.

A new lighting scheme was designed for the basilica, and extensive simulations were carried out. In order to reduce energy and maintenance costs, a low energy lighting system was proposed consisting of LED downlights, and LED pelmet lighting within the chapel areas.
