The Wallace Collection is a national museum in a historic London town house. IN2 undertook extensive environmental and lighting analysis, for the design of the refurbishment of both East and West Galleries. There were strict conservation requirements due to the historic nature of both the building and the artworks on exhibition.

IN2’s environmental analysis considered the introduction of bespoke lay-light to the Galleries, in order to enable a view of the sky and some provision of daylight without compromising strict Conservation requirements (i. Maximum Illuminance 200 Lux, ii. Maximum Cumulative Exposure Values 600,000 Lux-hours), ensuring that both peak and cumulative light exposure were within design requirements. Unique light shafts were developed which provided necessary daylight, but ensured that there was minimal direct sunlight to the walls/artworks. These light shafts enable a view of the sky while allowing services maintenance access. Each gallery required a slightly different size of light shaft to ensure the optimum light was directed into the space. The design proposed the installation of identical light shafts, for ease of construction, with identical internal lanterns for visual consistency. To enable different light levels dependent on the gallery, inner elliptical rings were designed for each internal lantern which limited direct sunlight according to the levels required in each gallery.

IN2 were also responsible for the design and site supervision of the internal lighting installations. This design was developed based on LED technology (replicating halogen lamp colour) in order to ensure a low-energy lighting installation with minimal maintenance requirements.
