Airfield Evolution

Client: Airfield Trust
Architect: Solearth
Value: €10m

Building services design for both the new low-energy buildings and the refurbishment of the existing listed buildings on the site of Airfield City farm in Dundrum. The project aim was to create an enhanced landscape of farm and garden activities; eco structures and buildings that make a positive contribution to the unique ‘Airfield experience’; conservation works that strengthen the architectural character of the existing building stock and the development of sustainable and energy efficient designs based on passive measures. As well as new entrances and car parks, the project involved the creation of a new shop and entrance pavilion, new waterside restaurant , new facilities for education, car display, new horticultural and cooking demonstration areas, and a new farmyard complex. IN2 carried out significant wind, energy and photorealistic lighting analysis to ensure that the high design standards were achieved.
Sustainability strategies underpinned and are suffused throughout the design decisions. Low embodied CO2 materials and passive servicing strategies inform the approach to all buildings, while habitat restoration, water conservation and recovery and the minimisation of the impacts of traffic and nearby development govern site strategy and approaches to land use throughout.
