Project Summary
Client: Pillar / Aspen Hotels Ltd.
Architect: Red Deer
Location: Manchester, United Kingdom
Completion Date: May-2022

About the Project

The Alan Hotel is a unique Grade II listed building spanning 6 storeys in Manchester City Centre, the hotel was ‘born from a vision of wanting to do things differently.’ The project brief was to ensure up-cycling as much of the building’s original materials as possible and provide an ideal base to explore what the city has to offer. IN2 were appointed in 2020 by Pillar Consulting and the client to undertake the complete MEP design of this hotel refurbishment.

The design philosophy for the building was to utilise the existing services whilst bringing the project in line with current regulations while adhering to the client’s requirements and architect’s vision. The objectives for IN2 were to provide Building Services Installations designs based on robust Mechanical and Electrical systems to ensure sustainable and reliable performance throughout. Systems and components will be designed and selected on a low-maintenance / low-energy approach, to ensure on-going operational costs are minimised throughout the building and associated systems’ life cycles.

The Mechanical and Electrical systems are designed to be user friendly with simple intuitive controls appropriate for all building users. Our approach ensured co-ordination of Mechanical and Electrical services design solutions and to work closely with architects and the design team, such that the mechanical and electrical services are co-ordinated in respect of the integration of services with other specialists and main contract works. IN2 also collaborated with the client and architect to carefully develop the lighting design throughout the hotel. This close collaboration ensured that the final lighting design is harmonious with the client’s vision of the interior design including colours, finishes, etc.

The hotel successfully opened to the public in May 2022.
